Start with the workload
For a file server, the questions are straightforward: how much data, how many users, what file sizes, what network speed, and what recovery expectation? For media, containers, development, or remote access, the design can change significantly.
Choose storage deliberately
The storage interface, drive type, capacity, redundancy, and backup target matter more to the long-term experience than the Raspberry Pi itself. A good design leaves a clear path to add capacity later.
Separate redundancy from backup
Mirroring or other redundancy can help with availability, but it does not replace a backup. A practical system should define what is copied, how often, where it is stored, and how recovery will be tested.
Keep the system supportable
Document the operating system, storage layout, network settings, services, update process, and recovery steps. A NAS that only one person understands is a fragile solution.
